Gabriel Duiga: Driving Attendance and Opportunity, One Delivery at a Time

Before the morning sun has fully climbed over the horizon in Embu County, Kenya, Gabriel Duiga is already preparing for a journey that fuels the future of hundreds of children.

Along the winding paths that connect local communities, Gabriel is a familiar sight on his motorcycle, carrying more than just supplies. He is a vital link in a chain of hope, delivering warm, nutritious servings of uji (porridge) to young learners who might otherwise start their day on an empty stomach.

The Silent Barrier to Education

Across Sub-Saharan Africa, hunger remains one of the most persistent obstacles to education. In Kenya alone, 60% of children suffer from inadequate nutrition, a crisis that directly undermines school attendance and a child's ability to focus on their lessons. When a child is hungry, the classroom becomes a place of struggle rather than a place of possibility.

This is the reality Gabriel works to change every single morning.

From the Kitchen to the Classroom

Gabriel’s day begins between 7:30 and 8:30 AM at the Kang'aru Kitchen. Here, he collects churns filled with fresh porridge, carefully securing them for his route. His mission covers four key schools: Utawala, Njokerie, Dunda, and Ngerwe.

Starting with Utawala, which is closest to the kitchen, Gabriel spends about two hours ensuring every school on his list receives its delivery on time. "I enjoy working with Food4Education," Gabriel says, noting that the reliability of the program is what makes it so effective.

A Growing Community of Learners

For Gabriel, the impact of his work is visible in the faces of the students and the growing numbers in the classrooms. Since the program began, he has witnessed a transformation in the schools he serves.

"The population of pupils has increased," Gabriel observes. "Pupils who could not afford a cup of porridge have joined school because they now know they have something to take."

His observation highlights a powerful truth: when the barrier of hunger is removed, the door to education swings wide open. Children who were once held back by poverty are now motivated to attend, knowing they will be nourished and ready to learn.

A Shared Responsibility

Gabriel’s route is a core part of the Food4Education school feeding program, supported by Dubai Cares through its Feed a Child, Build a Kitchen campaign. This community-led, "farm-to-fork" model does more than just fill plates; it creates dignified jobs for riders like Gabriel and strengthens the entire local food system.

By the time Gabriel returns his empty churns to the kitchen to wait for the next day, he has helped secure a foundation for better educational outcomes for an entire generation.

Where Commitment Meets Impact

For Gabriel Duiga, every mile traveled is a commitment kept. He is not just a rider; he is not simply delivering meals; he is delivering possibility. In a region where hunger often stands in the way of learning, Gabriel’s steady presence on the road proves that the dedication of one person can ripple outward, nourishing the hope and health of a whole community.
